Water for Rivers is all about finding water savings and since its inception in December the organisation has made good progress.

Chairman Richard Bull and chief executive officer Neville Smith recently announced six new water-saving projects in NSW and Victoria.

A federal, NSW and Victorian initiative, the organisation has been charged with finding water savings that will go towards environmental flows in the Murray and Snowy Rivers.

Mr Bull said the six projects would produce water savings of about 65 gigalitres a year while not impacting on irrigators' productivity.

"We have a strong belief in the future of irrigation as well as providing for environmental benefits in the Snowy and Murray Rivers," Mr Bull said.

"This company, in partnership with government, water companies, water authorities and water users, will identify more projects that will provide long-term water savings.

"Projects may take the form of reducing evaporation and channel seepage or more efficient methods of application, but will meet our vested charter to acquire water at the least cost for the benefit of a healthy river system and the sustainability of our region.

"It's our responsibility to find water savings and turn them into solutions for environmental river flows and we are pleased to have created the partnerships for these first six projects which will provide a win-win for water authorities and farmers."
