About Water for RiversThe Joint Government Enterprise Limited was incorporated as a Public Company limited by guarantee in December 2003. Its establishment arose out of legal agreements by the Commonwealth, New South Wales and Victorian Governments to achieve significant improvements in environmental flows into the Snowy River and the River Murray. To meet those objectives, the three Governments have committed $375 million progressively through to June 2012 for the Company to achieve total targeted water savings of 282 gigalitres, being 212 gigalitres for the Snowy River and 70 gigalitres for the River Murray. The Company may also be required to commission necessary environmental and riverine works as agreed by the Member's Government's. For operational purposes, the Company has registered a Business Name "Water for Rivers" and carries out its day to day business activities under that name. The Board of the Company comprises three Directors, unanimously appointed by the participating Governments. The business activities and functions of the Company are empowered by the Members Agreement and Funding Deed, which encompass specific provisions contained in the Snowy Water Inquiry Outcomes Implementation Deed (SWIOID). Water for Rivers is in a unique position to bring together and interact with a wide range of stakeholders and business partners, including Governments and their Agencies, irrigation organisations, local government, industry and business organisations, community groups and individuals to achieve the water savings necessary to improve the health of the Snowy River and Murray River systems. |
