Yanco Creek Efficiency Project
Estimated Water Saving 10,000 ML (10 GL) The Yanco Creek system is an important effluent system of the Murrumbidgee River which meets the Murray River system at Moulamein. This project will establish a hydraulic and hydrological model of the system to review all aspects of water delivery through the Yanco Creek system to identify the location and quantity of losses, and those measures which will return the most cost effective efficiencies and water savings. The project will investigate options which include alternative water supply routes, regulating water flow into wetlands and breakouts, modification or removal of in-stream regulating structures, improved system gauging, and improved metering and monitoring of water use. The project will also investigate the feasibility of reducing irrigation demand on the Yanco Creek system, allowing flow rates through the creek to be reduced and losses to be minimised. This approach to creek efficiency will require the development of supporting policy and new operational rules by the State Water Corporation and the Department of Water and Energy. The Yanco Creek Efficiency project will result in water savings and more efficient delivery of water for irrigation, domestic and stock along the Yanco Creek and its tributaries. The extent of water savings from the project are now currently estimated at 10 GL. Water for Rivers is currently working with the State Water Corporation and DWE to roll out a pilot program of meter replacement in the Yanco Creek system which will assist in the identification and quantification of metering error, design and installation issues and options, meter selection and logistics related to large scale implementation. Construction of the hydraulic model for the Yanco Creek system has brought together ALS and weir survey data to provide a realistic representation of flow behaviour, allowing areas of major losses to be targeted by works and identifying the optimum flow rates through the creek to maximise efficient delivery of water and minimise losses. The data in the hydraulic model will also be used to better inform the IQQM for the Murrumbidgee regulated river system.
