Willow Removal

Willow Removal

Estimated Saving 1,000 ML (1.0 GL)

An ongoing scientific study along the Billabong Creek near Jerilderie in NSW is showing that inundated weeping willows transpire 4ML/crown hectare/annum more water than the equivalent area of open water. Removing willows from streams will produce measured water saving, as well as significantly improve stream efficiency.

Negotiations are in progress with DNR in NSW and DSE in Vic to claim a system saving for the removal of willows. Several issues are unresolved such as the additional water saving from efficiency gains, and the benchmark area of willows at the time of the "cap".

CMAs are already removing willows using funds from various sources and any negotiated system saving will be aligned with these removal programs. An estimated 250 hectares of willow infestation will provide 1.0GL of savings, based on the scientific results available to date.
